The Bahamas, a popular tropical paradise, is projected to attract a record-breaking eight million tourists this year, surpassing the previous record of 7.2 million visitors in 2019. According to Latia Duncombe, Director General of the Ministry of Tourism, Investments, and Aviation, over 6.6 million tourists visited the country by August 2023, with a significant increase in both air and cruise arrivals. “We are thrilled to see such a strong rebound in our tourism sector, which is vital for our economy and our people. We have worked hard to ensure that The Bahamas is a safe and attractive destination for travelers from all over the world,” she said.

One of the factors that contributed to the tourism boom is the renovation of the Nassau Cruise Port, which cost more than $300 million and debuted in May 2023. The port can accommodate larger ships and offers a taste of Bahamian culture with the Museum of Junkanoo and locally owned shops. Mike Maura Jr., CEO and director of Nassau Cruise Port, said that the port expects to welcome 4.2 million passengers this year, up from 3.9 million in 2019. “This project is also serving as the catalyst for Nassau, as we are working with the government to improve the surrounding areas and infrastructure,” he said.

Another factor is the opening of new resorts and hotels in Nassau and other islands, such as the Goldwynn Resort & Residences, which opened in July 2023. The resort features luxury suites, a private beach club, a rooftop pool, and a fine dining restaurant. The British Colonial Hotel, which closed last year, is also undergoing renovation and is expected to reopen later this year.

The Bahamas also benefits from increased air service from major markets such as Los Angeles, Seattle, New York, and Atlanta. JetBlue added weekly, nonstop service from Los Angeles in November 2023, while Alaska Airlines debuted winter nonstops from Los Angeles and Seattle in December 2023. These flights make it easier for travelers to reach The Bahamas in less than six hours.

The most popular event that attracts visitors to The Bahamas is the Junkanoo Festival, which is held every year on Boxing Day (December 26) and New Year’s Day (January 1). The festival is a colorful celebration of Bahamian culture, music, dance, and art. Thousands of people dress up in elaborate costumes and parade through the streets of Nassau and other towns, competing for prizes and glory. The festival is a must-see for anyone who wants to experience the vibrant spirit of The Bahamas.

The Bahamas Achieves Unprecedented Tourism Success with Record-Breaking Eight Million Visitors

Chester Cooper, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism shared his optimism, stating, “The Bahamas has long been a sought-after destination, and reaching eight million visitors is a milestone that reflects the collective dedication of our tourism professionals nationwide. We are grateful for the support of our partners in the travel industry, who have helped us promote our beautiful islands and our diverse offerings. We look forward to welcoming more visitors in 2024 and beyond.”

Other popular events in The Bahamas include the McLean’s Town Conch Cracking Festival on Grand Bahama Island, which celebrates the flavor of the conch with great food, traditional games, and a contest to determine the title of “Best Conch Cracker”; the Bahamas International Film Festival in Nassau, which attracts Hollywood celebrities and showcases films from around the world; and the Marathon Bahamas in Nassau, which features a scenic course along the oceanfront and attracts runners of all levels.
