Guyana is a country rich in natural beauty and cultural diversity. One of its hidden gems is Scottsburg Beach, located in the town of Corriverton in the Berbice region. Scottsburg Beach is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, who enjoy its pristine sand, clear water and scenic views.

On a recent trip to Guyana, I had the opportunity to visit this most beautiful and underrated beach. It was my first time in Berbice, the easternmost region of the country, and I was amazed by the diversity and richness of its culture, history and nature.

I traveled with a group of friends who are from Barbice, a small town near the beach. They were the perfect guides to show us around and introduce us to the local lifestyle. We stayed at a cozy family house that had a stunning view of the Atlantic Ocean and the Corentyne River, which forms the border with Suriname.

One of the highlights of the trip was tasting the delicious food that Berbice has to offer. We had some of the best roti, curry, cook-up rice, pepperpot and metemgee that I have ever had. We also tried some local specialties like black pudding, souse, cassava bread and awara cheese. And of course, we indulged in some of the local alcoholic beverages, such as rum, wine and the local 592 beer.

The trip would have been complete until I experienced Scottsburg Beach. The beach itself was a paradise. The sand was soft and golden, the water was clear and warm, and the waves were gentle and soothing. We spent hours swimming, sunbathing, playing volleyball and building sandcastles. We also enjoyed watching the fishermen bring in their catch of the day, which included crabs, shrimps, snapper and Bangamary fish.

Scottsburg Beach is about 10 km from the Suriname border and can be reached by car, bus or boat. The beach is part of the Corentyne River estuary, which forms the boundary between Guyana and Suriname. The river meets the Atlantic Ocean at this point, creating a unique ecosystem that supports a variety of wildlife. You can spot turtles, pelicans and other birds along the shore, as well as fish and crabs in the water.

The beach itself is a long stretch of white sand that curves along the coast. The sand is soft and clean, perfect for relaxing or playing. The water is warm and shallow, ideal for swimming or kayaking. There are also some rocky areas that offer opportunities for snorkeling or fishing. The beach is usually not crowded, so you can enjoy some peace and quiet or have a picnic with your friends or family.

One of the best things about Scottsburg Beach is the view. You can see the river mouth and the ocean on one side, and the green hills and forests on the other. The sunsets are especially spectacular, as the sky turns into a palette of colors that reflect on the water. You can also see the lights of Nieuw Nickerie, the capital of Suriname’s Nickerie district, across the river at night.

Scottsburg Beach is more than just a beach. It is a place where you can experience nature, culture and history. The beach is named after James Douglas Scott, a Scottish businessman who established a sugar plantation there in the 19th century. You can still see some of the remnants of his estate, such as a chimney and a cemetery. You can also learn more about the local culture and history at the nearby Corriverton Museum, which displays artifacts and exhibits related to the town’s development.

Scottsburg Beach is a must-see attraction for anyone visiting Guyana. It offers a relaxing and enjoyable escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, as well as a chance to explore a different side of the country. Whether you are looking for adventure, romance or family fun, Scottsburg Beach has something for everyone.
