Global Sparkling Wine Market
By: Dr. Elinor Garely – Contributing Wine Editor
The global sparkling wine market is projected to generate $45.1 billion in revenue in 2024. This figure is split between out-of-home consumption (e.g., in restaurants and bars) at $24.4 billion and at-home sales (e.g., supermarkets and convenience stores) amounting to $21 billion. However, the market is expected to experience a slight decline in volume growth, with an anticipated drop of 1.3% in 2025.
Cava Market Insights
Cava (Spanish for an underground cellar) currently represents about 10% of the global sparkling wine market. While it maintains a significant presence, it faces intense competition from Prosecco and Champagne, which dominate larger market shares.
In 2023, the D.O. Cava market reached an all-time high, with sales growing by 1.09% to 252 million bottles. The domestic Spanish market saw a 4.02% increase, while international sales dipped slightly by 0.25%, influenced by inflation and decreased demand from the United States. Sales of organic Cava have surged by 24.59%, with 32.3 million organically certified bottles sold, highlighting a commitment to sustainability and high-value products.
By the Numbers
1. D.O. Cava reached record sales of over 250 million bottles in 2023.
2. Key international markets include Germany, the United States, Belgium, and the United Kingdom, contributing significantly to D.O. Cava sales.
3. Increasing numbers of Spanish consumers are embracing Cava, further boosting domestic consumption.
Strategies to Compete with Champagne and Prosecco
D.O. Cava has adopted several strategies to compete effectively with Champagne and Prosecco in the global market. The producers have invested in research resulting in improved winemaking techniques delivering an improved product to the marketplace. In addition, there are stricter aging criteria for wine producers especially for Gran Reserva to ensure increased complexity.
To differentiate Cava from Champagne there is a growing emphasis on highlighting Mediterranean flavors and affordability. Product differentiation continues with the introduction of rose Cavas and single-varietal offerings. In addition, many producers are introducing sustainable practices to attract environmentally conscious consumers.
Despite product quality, D.O. Cava faces ongoing challenges due to the historical prestige and brand recognition of Champagne and Prosecco. Increased creative, innovative, and directed marketing efforts are necessary to position Cava in this dynamic landscape. The intense global competition in the sparkling wine category cannot be overlooked. Many consumers are still unfamiliar with Cava, so effective marketing requires innovative and consistent public relations efforts, along with enhanced sales skills for sommeliers and retail staff. As consumers prioritize environmentally friendly practices, the Cava sector must adapt while balancing investment in organic production.
D.O. Cava Regulatory Council
The D.O. Cava Regulatory Board was established in 1959, marking the inception of trade regulations for sparkling wines in Spain. The term “Cava” was officially recognized in 1969, signifying sparkling wines produced through traditional fermentation methods.
Key milestones include:
1972: Formation of the Regulatory Board for Sparkling Wines.
1986: Spain’s EU accession granted D.O. wines equal status with premium European wines.
1991: Regulations for the Cava Designation of Origin were established.
Currently, following Law 6/2015, the Regulatory Board functions as the management entity for the Cava Protected Designation of Origin, equipped to implement its strategic plans effectively.
Future Opportunities
Cava is attempting to enhance its standing in the competitive sparkling wine market; however, the efforts are limited and not unique. As it navigates challenges it is hoped that Cava wine producers will benchmark successful wine markets such as Champagne and Prosecco to create demands for a product that delivers a rewarding taste experience.
